Wilkens Mathieu was awarded a questionable decision in his backyard of Quebec, Canada. The decisions stinks of illegitimacy with the two judges who only found two rounds to give Shishkin after he clearly dominated the second half of the fight.
I know the broadcast commentary has no reflection on the judging but my BS alarm went up when they were not sure if Shishkin had won any rounds during the eighth round. The broadcast showed no unofficial scores and did not post the punch statistics. There were rounds in the back half of the fight where Mathieu did very little. One or two punches at a time followed by a long break. During these timeouts, Shishkin threw his hands and constantly peppered Mathieu.
Mathieu is a very athletic fighter with quick punches, power and explosiveness. However, he was very wild, swinging wide telegraphed bombs that fell short. He fights with a lot of frenetic energy that wastes stamina. He landed some of the bombs early and won some rounds where it appeared Shishkin landed more.
Neither fighter every seemed hurt or buzzed by anything. However, Shishkin continually was first, pressing the action and backing Mathieu up. Mathieu coasted a lot in fight that would appear close, the urgency seemed to be there with Shishkin who appeared to be disappointed at the end despite possibly winning. His reaction resembled someone who knew the result before it was read. Normally a fighter raises their glove or celebrates a close fight. Even the crowd did not cheer loudly at the decision for the hometown guy.
