Reaction: Thurman’s call out & Canelo-Bivol II

Based on recent news from the boxing world, I will share my opinion on two recent headlines. Recently, welterweight Keith Thurman has called out the winner of Terrence Crawford and Errol Spence. Saul Alvarez and Dmitry Bivol have seen their negotiations fall apart for a rematch.

Thurman’s call out: I flat out do not think that Keith Thurman deserves a direct shot at the Undisputed walterweight title after Crawford and Spence fight it out. Thurman has not won a significant fight in the division since 2017 when he defeated Danny Garcia. Since then he has fought three times with a win against Josesito Lopez where he was rocked, a loss in an admirable performance against Manny Pacquiao, and a win over Mario Barrios who is moving up in weight. I don’t like the idea of a fighter. these inactive jumping contenders who one fight to earn their shot. I would like to see Thurman fight Jaron Ennis as that would hit a former unified belt holder against the most exciting Contender moving up the ranks. In a recent debate that I had, someone stated that they didn’t see what the fight did for Thurman and argued that Ennis was the mandatory Challenger and had nothing to gain. I think that Thurman should have to earn his shot and that beating a young hot Prospect like Ennis would be a big win for him and solidify that title shot. For Ennis, just because he is the leading contender, doesn’t mean he’s ready. We all remember what happened to Erickson Lubin when he faced Jermal Charlo and got destroyed in the first round because he didn’t have a sufficient test on the way up. There are too many hungry young welterweight contenders for Thurman to just cut the line.

Canelo va Bivol II Stalled: I have to lay the blame on Alvarez this time. I feel that Bivol, despite being the B-side is entitled to a bigger split and some say on the terms. We watched Bivol defend his title and take short money only to get the big victory. He should be rewarded in some way in the negotiation process. I understand in this sport there are draws and that the guy who commands the money calls the shots but I feel that if somebody has a win in the series that they should command some part of the decision making. While I think it’s more interesting to watch both Fighters take on the more interesting fights in their own division, I was looking forward to Alvarez attempting to avenge what I thought was a landslide loss. I don’t think that Bivol should be blamed for this fight falling apart.
