Tony Galento Remembered in Orange, NJ

The nature of my work has changed recently allowing me to travel around Essex County, New Jersey. Along my travels I got a chance to see a street in Orange named after Tony Galento. Downtown has honored different figures like former Governor Richard Cody and other famous residents including the ex-heavyweight challenger “Two Ton” Galento. The heavyweight contender from the 1930s is best known for his 1939 title fight with Joe Louis. Galento like Chuck Wepner is another born and raised Jersey guy who got a crack at arguably the greatest heavyweight of all time and a legend in their own way. Both Tony and Chuck had the champion on the canvas and inspired many with their performance. Both were also larger than life characters fit for books and movies. Galento also scored a memorable victory over highly rated contender Lou Nova and shared the ring with ex-champ Max Baer.
