Boxing fans on social media are now being stoked by recent statements from promoter Oscar De La Hoya. Oscar is hinting at a possible fight between recently defeated Ryan Garcia and Adrian Broner. Broner still has a following out there and fans on social media still seem to think Broner is the same fighter he was four or five years ago. He has only one win since 2017 and that win versus Jovine Santiago was a fight I scored the other way. Broner had a stretch of fights where he lost to Mikey Garcia, drew with Jesse Vargas in a fight where many felt he lost and was wiped out by Manny Pacquiao in a lopsided decision. I wrote off Broner following that stretch and the fighter who emerged with so much potential on HBO in the 2010’s fell short of his promising hype. Broner still was a good draw and still has fans and is a possible lucrative fight for guys climbing the ladder. I don’t like this fight as I would rather see Garcia take on fights that grow him as a fighter and put him closer to title contention. That said, this would be a good scalp for him to put on his young record and he would likely get plenty of money and garner attention for this type of win. Despite the poor showings Broner has had and the poor lifestyle he has had outside the ring many still think he is a top fighter. He might have enough left to shock the relatively unproven Garcia but he is nowhere near the level of the fighters holding titles except maybe side show Rolly Romero. I know this is prizefighting and the goal is to make money but I think Ryan needs to focus on development and not lucrative hype fights. Hopefully, if Broner is next he will follow it up with a guy in the top ten at 140 and try to position himself against world class guys where he can grow and excel in his boxing. As for Broner, lets see how he does against Bill Hutchinson this weekend.
