Set your calendars for July 29th, one of the most anticipated fights in boxing is finally signed. Terrence Crawford and Errol Spence are set to meet in a welterweight unification clash at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. They have also signed a rematch clause that mandates a second fight to happen before the end of 2023. After several years of posturing and promotional squabbles the ink has finally dried on a contract. I will admit as a close follower of the sport I had begun to give up on this fight a little and felt that: A, it wasn’t going to happen, B, I stopped caring if it did. I would be lying to my readers if I said that I was not excited about this one. Am I annoyed that there is such a large influx of PPV fights, yes, and I will be paying for this one. I am not prepared to do a preview yet but will do a breakdown of this fight closer to the date. My early gut feeling on this is to go with Errol Spence. I like the fact that he is younger, naturally bigger, and has a better pedigree at welterweight. That said, it is tough to erase the vision of Spence being rocked to his foundation against Yordenis Ugas and his inactivity is a bit concerning in comparison to Crawford who just fought. Also, given their most recent common opponent Shawn Porter, Crawford had an easier time. 2023 is shaping up to be great for boxing, maybe the best year in the last twenty.
